Roles of an OBG Specialist / Consultant


Job description

Is responsible for providing comprehensive care related to women's reproductive health, pregnancy, childbirth, and gynecological conditions. Typical roles and responsibilities include:

Roles and Responsibilities of an OBG Specialist / Consultant

  • Patient Assessment and Diagnosis
  • Evaluate patients through history taking, physical examinations, and diagnostic investigations.
  • Diagnose obstetric and gynecological disorders accurately.
  • Interpret laboratory tests, ultrasound scans, CTG, and other diagnostic reports.

Antenatal Care

  • Monitor pregnant women throughout pregnancy.
  • Identify and manage high-risk pregnancies.
  • Counsel patients regarding nutrition, lifestyle, medications, and fetal well-being.

Labour and Delivery Management

  • Conduct normal vaginal deliveries.
  • Perform instrumental deliveries when indicated.
  • Perform cesarean sections (elective and emergency).
  • Manage obstetric emergencies such as postpartum hemorrhage, eclampsia, and obstructed labor.

Postnatal Care

  • Monitor maternal recovery after delivery.
  • Manage postpartum complications.
  • Provide breastfeeding guidance and family planning counseling.

Gynecological Care

  • Diagnose and treat menstrual disorders, infertility, PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids, pelvic infections, and menopausal problems.
  • Manage sexually transmitted infections affecting women's reproductive health.

Surgical Procedures

  • Perform minor and major gynecological surgeries.
  • Conduct laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures.
  • Perform hysterectomy, myomectomy, ovarian cystectomy, D&C, and other indicated surgeries.

Emergency Care

  • Provide 24/7 emergency obstetric and gynecological services as per duty roster.
  • Manage ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, severe bleeding, and other emergencies.

Preventive Healthcare

  • Conduct cervical and breast cancer screening.
  • Administer HPV vaccination counseling.
  • Promote preventive women's healthcare programs.

Patient Counseling

  • Educate patients on reproductive health, contraception, infertility treatment options, menopause, and prenatal care.
  • Explain treatment plans, surgical procedures, risks, and obtain informed consent.

Multidisciplinary Collaboration

  • Coordinate with neonatologists, anesthesiologists, radiologists, physicians, intensivists, nurses, and other specialists.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions.

Medical Documentation

  • Maintain accurate electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Complete discharge summaries, operative notes, birth records, consent forms, and clinical documentation.

Quality and Patient Safety

  • Adhere to hospital policies, clinical protocols, and evidence-based guidelines.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, infection control, clinical audits, and patient safety programs.

Academic and Training Activities

  • Train junior doctors, interns, residents, and nursing staff.
  • Participate in CMEs, workshops, conferences, and departmental teaching sessions.

Research and Clinical Governance

  • Participate in clinical research and publication activities.
  • Contribute to protocol development and implementation of best practices.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Attend departmental meetings.
  • Assist in departmental planning and service improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation standards (e.g., NABH, JCI, or local regulatory requirements).

Ethical and Legal Compliance

  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Practice within ethical and legal standards.
  • Comply with national healthcare regulations and medico-legal documentation requirements.

These responsibilities may vary depending on the hospital's level of care (secondary, tertiary, or quaternary), available specialty services (such as fetal medicine, reproductive medicine, or gynecologic oncology), and local regulatory requirements.

Following education and experience requirements should align with international practice while incorporating the current Oman Ministry of Health (MOH)/OMSB licensing requirements.

Education

  • MBBS or equivalent medical degree from a recognized university.
  • MD/MS/DNB in Obstetrics & Gynecology from a recognized institution.
  • Valid medical registration with the relevant Medical Council/Licensing Authority.
  • Fellowship or additional certification in areas such as:
  • Minimal Access (Laparoscopic) Surgery
  • Reproductive Medicine/Infertility
  • Maternal & Fetal Medicine
  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Urogynecology (preferred, depending on hospital requirements).
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS); Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification is desirable.

Experience

  • Minimum 3–5 years of post-specialization clinical experience as an OBG Specialist/Consultant in a multispecialty or corporate hospital (experience requirements may vary by organization).
  • Proven experience in managing normal and high-risk pregnancies.
  • Hands-on experience in conducting normal vaginal deliveries, instrumental deliveries, and cesarean sections.
  • Experience in performing major and minor gynecological surgeries, including laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures.
  • Ability to manage obstetric and gynecological emergencies independently.
  • Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMR/HIS) systems.
  • Participation in clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and accreditation standards (e.g., NABH, JCI) is preferred.
  • Teaching, mentoring, or research experience is an added advantage.

Technical Skills

  • Expertise in obstetric and gynecological diagnosis and treatment.
  • Proficiency in ultrasound interpretation and fetal monitoring (CTG).
  • Skilled in minimally invasive gynecological procedures.
  • Competence in emergency obstetric care and critical decision-making.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based clinical guidelines and protocols.
  • Ability to interpret laboratory and diagnostic investigations accurately.
  • Proficiency in maintaining clinical documentation and medico-legal records.
