Is responsible for planning, managing, and securing all information technology systems that support clinical, administrative, and business operations. Their role combines strategic leadership, operational management, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance.
Roles and Responsibilities:
1. IT Strategy and Planning
- Develop and implement the hospital's IT strategy aligned with business and healthcare goals.
- Prepare annual IT budgets and technology roadmaps.
- Identify and implement emerging healthcare technologies to improve patient care and operational efficiency.
2. Hospital Information Systems Management
- Manage and maintain Hospital Information Systems (HIS).
- Ensure smooth functioning of:
- Electronic Medical Records (EMR/EHR)
- Laboratory Information System (LIS)
- Radiology Information System (RIS)
- Pharmacy Management System
- Billing and Financial Systems
- Coordinate software upgrades and system integrations.
3. Infrastructure Management
- Oversee servers, storage, networks, internet connectivity, and data centers.
- Ensure high availability of critical hospital systems.
- Manage cloud infrastructure and virtualization where applicable.
- Maintain backup power support for IT infrastructure.
4. Cybersecurity and Data Protection
- Develop cybersecurity policies and procedures.
- Protect patient data from unauthorized access and cyber threats.
- Implement firewalls, antivirus solutions, endpoint security, and intrusion detection systems.
- Conduct vulnerability assessments and security audits.
- Ensure secure remote access and VPN management.
5. Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and data privacy laws applicable to the hospital.
- Maintain audit trails and documentation.
- Support accreditation requirements through proper IT controls and documentation.
6. IT Operations and Support
- Lead the IT helpdesk and technical support team.
- Ensure timely resolution of hardware, software, and network issues.
- Monitor system uptime and service levels.
- Manage preventive maintenance schedules.
7. Medical Equipment Integration
- Coordinate integration of medical devices with hospital information systems.
- Support interfaces between diagnostic equipment and EMR/HIS.
- Collaborate with biomedical engineering teams.
8. Vendor and Contract Management
- Evaluate and select technology vendors.
- Negotiate software licenses and maintenance contracts.
- Monitor vendor performance and service-level agreements (SLAs).
- Manage procurement of IT hardware and software.
9. Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity
- Develop disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
- Ensure regular data backups and recovery testing.
- Minimize downtime during system failures or emergencies.
10. Team Leadership
- Train and mentor Hospital staff on IT Application usage.
- Assign responsibilities and monitor team performance.
- Promote continuous learning and certification.
11. Digital Transformation
- Lead implementation of digital healthcare initiatives such as:
- Telemedicine
- Mobile health applications
- Patient portals
- Digital payments
- AI-based healthcare solutions
- Clinical decision support systems
12. Reporting and Analytics
- Develop dashboards and management reports.
- Support clinical and business analytics.
- Ensure data accuracy for decision-making and regulatory reporting.
13. User Training
- Organize training programs for hospital staff on IT systems.
- Develop user manuals and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Promote user awareness of cybersecurity best practices.
14. Quality Improvement
- Monitor IT service quality through key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Identify opportunities for process automation.
- Improve system performance and user satisfaction.
15. Financial Management
- Control IT operational and capital expenditures.
- Optimize software licensing and hardware utilization.
- Evaluate return on investment (ROI) for technology projects.

Essential Qualifications
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Engineering, or a related field.

- Master's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business Administration (MBA), Healthcare Management, or Health Informatics.
- Postgraduate qualification in Hospital Administration or Health Informatics is an added advantage.
Other relevant certifications enhance an IT Head's expertise and credibility, such as:
Minimum Experience
- 6–12 years of progressive experience in Information Technology.
- At least 53 years in a managerial or leadership role.
Preferred Healthcare Experience
- 3–6 years of experience in a hospital, healthcare organization, or healthcare IT environment.
- Hands-on experience with Hospital Information Systems (HIS), Electronic Medical Records (EMR/EHR), Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), Radiology Information Systems (RIS), and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS).
